Origins of Halloween
Halloween has ancient roots that trace back to the Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated around November 1st in what is now Ireland, the UK, and northern France. Samhain marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. The Celts believed that on the night before, October 31st, the boundary between the living and the dead thinned, allowing spirits to roam the Earth. To ward off malevolent spirits, people lit bonfires and wore costumes, often animal skins and heads.
When Christianity spread to Celtic regions, the Church tried to integrate Samhain with their own holidays. Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as All Saints’ Day (also known as All Hallows’ Day) in the 8th century to honor saints and martyrs. The evening before became known as All Hallows’ Eve, which eventually evolved into Halloween.
The tradition of dressing up continued, but by the Middle Ages, costumes were often religious or supernatural in nature, and people would go door to door, asking for food or money in exchange for prayers for the dead—a custom known as souling. This is one origin of modern-day trick-or-treating.
Halloween spread to the United States with Irish and Scottish immigrants in the 19th century, where it gradually became a secular celebration focused on community activities, ghost stories, and fun for children.
“One good way to test your memory is to try to remember the things that worried you yesterday.”

Last dance and summer vacation at the Polish American Social Club of Pasco County
Summary
As we wrap up the first half of this incredible year, we’re taking a well-deserved vacation break, gearing up for an exciting restart on September 1st.. It’s hard to believe how quickly time has flown by, but in just a few months, we’ve hosted an array of fantastic events at the Polish American Social Club in Hudson.
Our Sunday dinners, masterfully prepared by Julia Nowak and her dedicated team, have been nothing short of spectacular. Despite working with a tight budget, they consistently delivered mouthwatering meals that truly capture the essence of traditional Polish feasts. The atmosphere during these dinners has been warm and inviting, with the dining hall filled with laughter, conversation, and the delightful aroma of home-cooked Polish cuisine. The dedication of Julia and her team is evident in every dish they serve. They work tirelessly behind the scenes, ensuring that every meal is perfect and that every guest leaves with a smile on their face and a full heart.
One of the standout highlights was undoubtedly the electrifying performance by the Polish Hip Hop group, Paktofonika. This event was a game-changer, attracting many new faces to our Club who had never visited before. The energy in the room was simply unforgettable! The beats were infectious, the lyrics powerful, and the crowd’s enthusiasm was through the roof. People were dancing, cheering, and completely absorbed in the music. It was a night that truly showcased the unifying power of music and left everyone buzzing with excitement long after the final note was played.
We were also thrilled to welcome Teatr Nasz from Chicago for an incredible theater performance. Their show was a masterclass in storytelling and drama, capturing the audience’s attention from start to finish. The hall was packed with attendees who were completely engrossed in the performance, reacting with gasps, laughter, and applause. The actors’ dedication to their craft was evident in every scene, making it a truly memorable experience for all who attended.
Adding to our lineup of amazing events, we hosted Chants – Mlynn Chicago, who had the crowd roaring with their sailor songs and ballads. The atmosphere was electric, and the audience was absolutely captivated. The performance was lively and engaging, with attendees singing along, clapping, and applauding almost every song. It was a night filled with nostalgia, camaraderie, and a deep appreciation for the rich maritime heritage celebrated through their music.
Our celebrations of International Women’s Day, Mother’s Day, and other special occasions have consistently drawn large, enthusiastic crowds, adding to the vibrant and welcoming spirit of our Club. These events are always a highlight, bringing together members of all ages to honor and celebrate the important people and moments in our lives. The enthusiasm of the attendees is contagious, with everyone coming together to share in the joy and festivities.
We cherish the heartfelt speeches by the Club’s president, Mark Stys, who always brings updates on upcoming events and dealings with the Club’s day-to-day operations. We admire centenarian Alice Huber, who still gets up to dance to her personal anthem, “Living Next Door to Alice.” We enjoy Ed’s cheerful selections of jokes and well-researched historical excerpts. From touching tributes to lively music and dancing, these celebrations are a testament to the strong sense of community and the deep bonds that connect us all.
By now, everyone had noticed Adam Kaluza’s presence. He was diligently checking the admissions, cheerfully cruising between tables, and welcoming both old and new guests with a warm smile. Or Chris McDowell occasionally raising his voice with operatic attempts.
There We need to mention the names of some silent actors running around during major events and snapping unexpected photos, registering the presence of the prominent and not so prominent members. These are Krystyna Jakubowski and Dorota McDowell. You can find their efforts on Club’s Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61551210173418) or website (https://www.polamsocial.com )
We can’t wait to see what the rest of the year holds, and we’re looking forward to even more amazing events and unforgettable moments with our community. The dedication of our staff and the enthusiasm of our attendees make every event special, and we are incredibly grateful for the support and participation of everyone involved. Here’s to many more wonderful experiences and memories to come at the Polish American Social Club in Hudson!
See you in September!
